Pedagogy of Bharatanatyam training at Nrityopachara is as follows

  • Yoga and Exercices : Exercises and asanas are taught to build strength, posture and agility before starting with the basics of Bharatanatyam.
  • Adavus (Basic Steps): The foundation of Bharatanatyam lies in mastering the adavus. Each adavu introduces us to a different kind of movement patterns and foot work and hand movements. Teaching these adavus in different variations forms the core part of the curriculum for beginners. Introductions to Single hand and double hand gestures and various other slokas like pada bhedas, siro bhedas are also covered during this period.
  • Inroduction to Items: Once the adavus are mastered, items like Alarimpu, Jatiswaram, Shabdam are introduced.
  • Building Repertoire : Items and Choreography: Students are gradually introduced to more complex dance pieces like Varnam (a dramatic piece), Keertanams and Thillana (a lively concluding piece). Each piece presents a unique challenge and helps the student develop artistry and understanding of dance forms.Abhinaya items like Javali, Sringara padams are introduced much later.
  • Performance and Stage Presence At Nrityopachara we conduct annual shos in addition to performances in temples and festivals in the twin cities where most of the students are encouraged to perform.
  • Appearning to examinations in Bharatanatyam : Guru Mrs. Praveena Vadapalli is a certified teacher with Akhil Bharateeya Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya Mandal and students are encouraged to appear for graded exams every year, where the focus is on both theory and practicals. Students of Nrityopachara also appear for certificate and diploma examinations at Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University.
  • Arangetrams : Once a student completes a margam and is ready to present a whole margam(complete repertorie of Bharatantyam), students are encouraged to prepare for their arangetrams.
  • Productions : At Nrityopachara, we also come up with thematic productions and ballets and students depending on the suitability are encouraged to participate in the same.
